🚨 BREAKING: Toronto decline contract option for star keeper Sean Johnson

by

Toronto FC announced today that the club has declined the 2026 contract option for veteran goalkeeper Sean Johnson, signaling the end of his tenure after two seasons.

Johnson joined TFC ahead of the 2023 campaign as a high-profile free agent, bringing leadership and experience to a side in transition. The former New York City FC and Chicago Fire goalkeeper made over 50 appearances in all competitions for Toronto, serving as club captain for much of his time at BMO Field.

Despite Johnson’s leadership, Toronto endured another challenging year in 2025, missing the MLS Cup Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

With this roster move, the club appears to be preparing for another significant rebuild under head coach Robin Fraser.

Johnson’s departure opens up questions about Toronto’s future in goal, as the team will now look to either promote from within or explore the market for a new starting goalkeeper ahead of the 2026 MLS season.

Notably, reports out of Canada have suggested that they could turn their attention to Portland Timbers and Canada keeper Maxime Crépeau, who lost his starting spot in Portland in a contract year.

TFC finished with just six wins from 34 matches in the 2025 MLS regular season.
