1 Point Slam: Jannik Sinner falls to an amateur Jordan Smith

by

Jannik Sinner failed to chase $1 million at the 1 Point Slam in Melbourne, losing to an amateur Jordan Smith!

A thrilling format with only one point offered a chance for the lower-ranked players and amateurs.

Smith took his chance with both hands and stunned the defending Australian Open champion in the third round. Jannik faced Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round and won after drawing the rival's mistake.

The two-time defending Australian Open champion faced an amateur Smith in the third round and stood as a massive favorite, especially after serving. However, the four-time Major winner sprayed a double fault and ended his campaign before the closing stages.

It was a memorable night for Smith, but also for all the players who participated in the new format. The organizers offered a chance for the crowd to enjoy short and exciting battles, with one error showing the exit door.

Jannik experienced that in brutal fashion, although it's all about having fun and celebrating tennis. The Italian will now focus on the serious action, standing as the favorite to claim his third consecutive Australian Open trophy.

Sinner will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Open Week Showdown, making his final preparations for the start of the main draw action on Sunday.
