2027 4-star QB ‘locked in’ with Texas A&M, but will consider options

by

Texas A&M’s 2027 recruiting class is headlined by several players, including quarterback Jayce Johnson, who verbally committed to the Aggies back in August. Johnson has continued to look like one of the top junior signal callers with a very bright future. Already possessing the arm strength and accuracy required to thrive at the next level.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is hoping to sign Johnson this time next year, knowing that it will be a tough battle heading into the summer, but after Miles O’Neill entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, Texas A&M’s future quarterback room will look very different over the next two seasons.

Right now, Marcel Reed, the Aggies’ current starter, will return next season and has two more years of eligibility remaining. Next season, freshman Brady Hart will likely return, while incoming freshman Helaman Casuga will make his way to College Station in early January. However, once Johnson officially becomes an Aggie, the starting/backup job could be up for grabs.

On Tuesday, during the check-in portion of the Under Armour All-American Game, in which Jayce Johnson will appear, the four-star prospect explained his current recruiting status, stating that he is still “locked in” with the Aggies. Even after OC Collin Klein departed to become Kansas State’s head coach, Johnson explained that his recruitment is “still open” before returning to College Station on January 24.

“I’m locked in but I’ve still got my recruitment process open; you never know what can happen. My OC from Texas A&M just left, and that made me think about some things. But I’m still locked in with them; they’re family-oriented, and they are good people to be around who develop their players.”

Auburn, Tennessee, and several other programs are looking to flip Johnson heading into the summer, and no one can blame the Georgia native for considering his options ahead of the most critical stretch of his recruiting journey.

According to 247Sports, Jayce Johnson is currently positioned as the 65th-ranked prospect, the 7th-ranked quarterback, and the 7th-ranked prospect in Georgia.
