3 things we learned from Gilbert girls basketball’s win over B-F

GILBERT — Clutch performances from a couple of seniors helped the Gilbert girls basketball team snap a four-game losing streak with a 57-49 victory over Bondurant-Farrar on Jan. 9.

The Tigers outscored the Bluejays 24-14 in the fourth quarter to overcome a 35-33 deficit and end their losing streak. Senior guards Jordyn Crosman and Katie Sniezek combined for 12 points in the final quarter to help Gilbert pull away and improve to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the Raccoon River Conference.

Katie Sniezek scored 14 points on a perfect 6 of 6 shooting night from the field to help the Gilbert girls basketball team top Bondurant-Farrar, 57-49, on Jan. 9 at the Gilbert High School gym in Gilbert, Iowa.

“It feels great,” Crosman said. “We just need to take this momentum we that we have tonight and just carry it on through the rest of the season.”

Bondurant-Farrar fell to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

Here are three things we learned from Gilbert’s conference win over the Bluejays.

Tigers come up clutch

After struggling to find consistency on offense over the first three quarters, Gilbert found a way to put everything together over the final eight minutes.

Gilbert opened the final quarter on an 11-1 run to take control. Lucy Terrones and Sniezek opened the quarter with back-to-back baskets, Callie Hales rattled in a 3-pointer and followed that up with a driving basket and Sniezek added another score.

After Bondurant-Farrar’s Libby Weston hit a 3-pointer to pull the Bluejays within five, Sniezek drained a 3-pointer and Crosman followed with a basket from behind the arc to push Gilbert’s lead to 11. The Bluejays never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

Jordyn Crosman and Katie Sniezek deliver

Jordyn Crosman scored a game-high 15 points off the bench for the Gilbert girls basketball team during a 57-49 win over Bondurant-Farrar on Jan. 9 at the Gilbert High School gym in Gilbert, Iowa.

With Hales getting off to a slow start offensively, Gilbert needed other players to step up against Bondurant-Farrar.

Crosman and Sniezek were the ones to do it after they combined to shoot a perfect 10 of 10 from the field.

Crosman scored a game-high 15 points off the bench after shooting a perfect 4 of 4 from the field with three 3-pointers and making all four of her shots from the foul line. She also contributed two steals and two rebounds.

“I’ve been coming back from an ACL injury, so it’s just been getting used to everything,” Crosman said. “I think tonight I really got my confidence back.”

Sniezek scored 14 points on 6 of 6 shooting with two 3-pointers. She added five rebounds, two steals and one assist.

“Katie did a great job,” Hales said. “I feel like she just needed the confidence because we all know she can knock down those shots. I was super-excited to have both Katie and Jordyn being able to make those shots for us.”

Hales overcame her slow start to end the game with 12 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks.

Gilbert still needs to shore up some weaknesses

As well as Gilbert played down the stretch, the Tigers know there is still plenty of room for improvement heading into next week.

The Tigers struggled to keep Bondurant-Farrar off the offensive glass. The Bluejays’ Kaylee Hanson hurt Gilbert inside with 14 points, and offensive rebounds played a role in her success.

Gilbert can also improve at the foul line after going just 11 of 19 from the charity stripe on Jan. 9.

On the positive side, Gilbert shot 45% from the field and 42% from 3-point range. The Tigers also had just 11 turnovers on the night.
