Double-Dipping: The Medalists from Paris Olympics Who Returned to World Champs Podium (Men’s Edition)
At last year’s Olympic Games in Paris, 42 medals were distributed across 14 individual events. Of the athletes who earned those pieces of hardware, many competed at this summer’s World Championships in Singapore. However, several medalists did not compete for a variety of reasons (retirement, rest, injury), while some athletes, such as France’s Leon Marchand, opted for a scaled-back program.
When calculating the numbers between Paris and Singapore, 40.47 percent (17-for-42) of the men’s medalists from the Olympics returned to the podium in the same event. Cameron McEvoy (50 freestyle), David Popovici (200 freestyle), Lukas Martens (400 freestyle), Hubert Kos (200 backstroke) and Leon Marchand (200 IM/400 IM) were the swimmers who followed an Olympic crown with a world title.
