New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado was injured while playing for Puerto Rico in the AmeriCup quarterfinals. Alvarado fell on his tailbone while jostling for a rebound in overtime of Puerto Rico’s loss to Argentina. He was down on the ground for several minutes before being removed from the arena on a stretcher.
Alvarado later indicated he was ok. He posted on Instagram: “Appreciate the love, y’all. But your boy good. God got me.”
The four-year veteran is entering the first year of a two-year, $9 million extension that will pay him $4.5 million this season. Alvarado is expected to take on a bigger role than usual to open this season, as the Pelicans will be without starting point guard Dejounte Murray, as he recovers from a torn Achilles’ suffered last season.
