Young opening batter Prithvi Shaw has sparked speculation about joining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of IPL 2026. The like from the right-handed batter has created anticipation among fans, especially after he recently joined CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Maharashtra team.
Prithvi Shaw has faced a challenging phase with setbacks in his cricket career. He was left out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare squads and went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, raising questions about his commitment. Shaw was once touted as a future star but has been criticized for his attitude.
Prithvi Shaw Went Unsold in the IPL 2025 Auction Despite a Decent Record

Shaw has scored 1,892 runs in 79 IPL matches at an average of 23.94 and a strike rate of over 147. Overall, he has 2,902 runs from 117 T20s at a strike rate of 151.54, including one century and 20 fifties.
In the 2024 IPL season, he scored 198 runs in eight games for Delhi Capitals at an average of 24.75 and a strike rate of 163.63. He failed to attract bids from franchises during the auction.
CSK to Sign Prithvi Shaw to Revive Team After IPL 2025 Woes
Meanwhile, five-time champions Chennai Super Kings had a forgettable season in IPL 2025. They finished at the bottom of the points table with just four wins from 14 matches. The team struggled with batting for most of the season but showed only minor improvements towards the end.
CSK’s opening combinations failed to provide solid starts, and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s early injury further weakened the side. Players like Rahul Tripathi, Rachin Ravindra, and Devon Conway struggled at the top, forcing the team to experiment with openers such as Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre.
CSK need an aggressive opener who can take the attack to the bowlers. Shaw, with his attacking style, could be an ideal fit, while Gaikwad moving to number three would add stability and depth to the middle order.
