Stefanos Tsitsipas crashes out of US Open and adds $5,000 fine to his troubles

by

Stefanos Tsitsipas entered the US Open, his least favorite Major, without back-to-back victories since April. The Greek failed to score two wins in New York, embracing a terrible 7-8 run in New York and making his season even worse.

The former world no. 3 fell to Daniel Altmaier 7-6, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in four hours and 21 minutes in the second round following tense moments and underarm serve drama.

To add to his frustration, the Greek was fined $5,000 for a coaching violation. While coaching is permitted at Majors, it is only allowed when the player is on the same side of the court as his coach.

An infringement of this detail cost the Greek star financially, although he is much more worried about his lack of form. Stefanos departs the US Open with more disappointment and a fine that symbolizes the turbulent season he continues to endure.

As we already said, Tsitsipas has not scored consecutive victories since the Barcelona Open in April. He earned one win in three pre-US Open events and failed to improve his tally at the event where he always had difficulties to achieve a deep run.

The Greek grabbed his seventh victory in New York against Alexandre Muller, hoping for more versus Daniel Altmaier. Instead, the German prevailed after a massive battle and a heated closure.

Stefanos did not like Daniel's underarm serves, saying that he would hit him right in the body next time he tries that against him. The German did not want to get involved in that, stepping back and celebrating a notable victory.

Thus, Stefanos wrapped up his terrible season at Majors with two victories, playing miles below the level that made him a multiple Major finalist.

The latest setback adds another disappointing chapter to a season that has failed to live up to expectations. After a short time with Goran Ivanisevic, which did not end well, Tsitsipas works with his father again.

They will try to build the new foundation and seek better results in the remaining events of the season if Stefanos' troubled back endures the efforts.
