Updated Texas A&M injury report following Week 1 win over UTSA

by

Texas A&M’s 42-24 win over UTSA was technically a blowout, but entering the third quarter, the Roadrunners had a chance to take the lead after running back Robert Henry’s 75-yard touchdown run to open the second half. However, thanks to coach Mike Elko’s defensive adjustment, the Aggies’ anemic run defense suddenly shut down UTSA’s rushing attack for the rest of the night.

The real story was Texas A&M’s impressive passing attack, led by starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s improvement in the pocket, throwing for 289 yards and a career-high four touchdown passes, including three to transfer wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver.

Concepcion’s impressive 80-yard punt return touchdown, combined with his 31-yard touchdown reception, was just the first example of what he’s poised to do this season. In contrast, Craver’s game-high eight receptions, 122 receiving yards, and two touchdowns were made after the catch, for gains of 22 and 24 yards, showcasing his quickness and speed.

Going back to the defense, safety Bryce Anderson struggled immensely against the run, and due to junior Dalton Brooks missing the game due to an undisclosed injury, it’s no surprise the Aggies struggle to tackle at the second level.

On Monday, Coach Mike Elko spoke to the media during his weekly pregame press conference. He stated that Dalton Brooks will return to practice, which is good news for the Aggie secondary, especially after junior safety Marcus Ratcliffe’s impressive day.

Elko also revealed that Washington transfer cornerback Jordan Shaw, who also missed the opener, is currently “day-to-day,” while freshman running back Deondrae “Tiger” Riden, who was reportedly involved in a car accident this summer, is finally cleared to return to practice in full capacity.
