Tony Khan Pays Tribute to Taz Ahead of AEW Dynamite

by

Taz received a special honor from AEW and Tony Khan on September 3—but true to his humble nature, the ECW legend made sure the spotlight stayed on the talent.

Originally, AEW had planned to honor Taz during the Dynamite broadcast from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, the same venue that helped define his hardcore legacy during the ECW era. Instead, Tony Khan and Taz went live on X (formerly Twitter) just one hour before the show for an emotional, off-air tribute.

In the eight-minute video, Taz opened up about being “surprised” by the news that he was being inducted into the 2300 Arena Hall of Fame. But in classic Taz fashion, he asked AEW to scrap the planned tribute segment from Dynamite itself because he wants the focus to be on the talent.

That didn’t stop AEW from showing their respect. Tony Khan revealed that Taz’s Hall of Fame banner had already been raised inside the arena prior to the live taping, ensuring the moment was celebrated—even without the TV spotlight.

The rest of the video saw Taz and Khan break down the card for the September 3 edition of Dynamite, which streamed live on TNT and HBO Max as part of AEW’s ongoing residency at the historic venue.

Do you think AEW should have honored Taz on TV anyway, or was his low-key tribute the right move? Let us know how you’d have handled it in the comments.
