If losing wasn’t bad enough for the Florida Gators, the fallout from terrible play calling seems to be a hot topic in The Swamp. Billy Napier is in survival mode as well.

Fans filed out of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium chanting “Fire Billy” after the 18-16 loss to South Florida on Saturday. That raw emotion spilled over into a fake social media post, which has since gone viral. Like last week’s duped letter regarding the firing of Bill Belichick at UNC, the proposed letter from Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin explained how he plans to keep Napier.

“l am confident that Billy will meet the challenges and opportunities ahead,” the body of the letter read. “We will work alongside him to support any changes needed to elevate Gator football. As college athletics evolves, UF is committed to embracing innovation and strategy, ensuring the Gators thrive in today’s competitive landscape.”

This took a bad tone with Gators fans, including some who fired back at Sticklin directly on social media. One fan wrote, “Come on…..@ScottStricklin nothing in 4 years has been to “the gator standard” yet you let him continue like it has. You just got extended and this is your first major announcement. Pitiful.”

The Billy Napier era has prompted more questions that aren’t going away. In fact, the fans are getting louder. Florida lost a winnable non-conference game with over 100 penalty yards and two scores erased. It only gets tougher from here on out. Florida plays at No. 3 LSU before another road matchup with No. 5 Miami and then back home with No. 7 Texas all in subsequent weeks. 

“Not good enough and it’s my responsibility,” Napier said bluntly after Florida mistake-filled loss. The biggest blunder out of all of them was a personal foul penalty for spitting by defensive lineman Brendan Bett.

“When a guy does something like that, he’s compromising the team,” Napier stated. “He’s putting himself before the team. Everything the game is about, you’re compromising. So there will be lessons to be learned there.”

USF broke into AP rankings at No. 18 coming off another upset win under third-year coach Alex Golesh. The blasted then-ranked Boise State in Week 1. They’ll have a tall task with Miami next week. As of now, they’re the only team nationally to beat two ranked opponents over the first two games of the season.
