Former West Indies batting legend Chris Gayle recently shared his thoughts on Virat Kohliโs decision to retire from Test cricket. In May 2025, Virat Kohli stunned the entire cricket world by suddenly announcing his retirement from Test cricketโthe format he loved the most.
The former Indian captain ended his glorious Test career on May 12 after an illustrious stint of 123 matches and a massive tally of 9,230 runs to his name. Reacting to Kohliโs move, Gayle believes that his former RCB teammate stepped away from Test cricket too soon.

Chris Gayle said on Shubhankar Mishraโs podcast on YouTube, โOh yeah, very early. Very early. You know, for whatever reason, I donโt know, but Cricket will miss him 100%. Cricket will miss him. Heโs a massive, massive figure for the game of cricket.โ
Chris Gayle thrilled to celebrate RCBโs IPL 2025 triumph with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers
The former West Indies batter also expressed his happiness about being part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team that finally lifted the IPL trophy earlier this year.
He recalled the excitement of sharing the achievement with Virat Kohli after the IPL 2025 final, saying it was a special moment for the RCB and AB de Villiers.
Gayle further noted, โIโm just happy a guy like Virat lifted the trophy as well, because you know there was so much talk here and there. Weโd been to a couple of finals together, so I was really overwhelmed to actually be a part of that RCB team, to lift the trophy. And just as Iโm happy, Iโm sure AB was just as excited for RCB as well.โ
Notably, Gayle and De Villiers joined the RCB celebration on the ground and in the dressing room after they crushed the Punjab Kings and won the IPL 2025 trophy in June.

When Sunil Gavaskarโs prediction about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma comes true
Meanwhile, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskarโs old prediction about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has resurfaced. Gavaskar made that prediction during the 2012 Asia Cup, where Sachin Tendulkar played his last ODI game.
He had declared that Kohli and Rohit are Indiaโs future during the India versus Pakistan match in Mirpur, and the legendary batterโs prediction turned out true.
Gavaskar had said at the commentary box, โI think we have glimpsed the future. The future of Indian batting. Rahul Dravid has just called it a day. We donโt know how long Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman are going to be around. But I think that (Kohli and Rohit) is the glimpse of Indiaโs batting future.โ
Notably, both Kohli and Rohit have already retired from Test and T20I cricket, and now they are only active in ODI cricket. They will soon be seen in action in the three-match ODI series in Australia.
