Which NFL stadiums has OU football played in? List grows with Sooners vs Temple

by

Temple has played its home games at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, since 2003, when the stadium opened.

Playing in an NFL stadium, which the Sooners will do at 11 a.m. Saturday when they take on the Owls, is nothing new for OU.

This will be OU’s 10th game inside a current NFL stadium.

Here’s the list:

AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

The Sooners have been regulars at Jerry World, most recently playing there twice in an 11-day span in 2020 — in the Big 12 Championship against Iowa State and in the Cotton Bowl against Florida.

OU and BYU played the first-ever college football game at AT&T Stadium on Sept. 5, 2009. The Cougars beat the Sooners 14-13.

OU is 6-2 at Jerry World, including 5-0 in Big 12 Championship Games. OU’s other loss in the Arlington venue was to Texas A&M in the 2012 season.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017, replacing the Georgia Dome.

OU played a national semifinal game there in 2019, losing to LSU 63-28.

Soldier Field, Chicago

OU opened the 1997 season against Northwestern in the “Pigskin Classic” at Soldier Field.

The Sooners were shut out 24-0.

OU played at Cincinnati in 2010 in a game the Bearcats hosted off campus at what used to be Paul Brown Stadium, home of the Bengals. The Sooners won 31-29.

State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona

OU played three Fiesta Bowls here.

A 43-42 loss to Boise State in the 2006 season, a 48-28 loss to West Virginia in 2007 and a 48-20 win against UConn in 2010.

Opened in 2006, it was called University of Phoenix Stadium until 2018.

Houston beat OU 33-13 in the 2016 season opener.

OU beat Colorado in the Big 12 Championship Game inside what was then Reliant Stadium in 2002 — the first year the venue opened.

Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City

OU hasn’t played at Arrowhead since 2008, when it beat Missouri 62-21 in the Big 12 Championship Game.

The Sooners also played Big 12 title games in Kansas City in 2006, 2004, 2003 and 2000.

Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida

Hard Rock Stadium, which has had many names, has hosted the Orange Bowl since 1996.

OU most recently played there in 2018, when the Sooners lost 45-34 to Alabama in the Orange Bowl — a semifinal game in that season’s College Football Playoff.

OU, in another CFP semifinal game in Miami, lost to Clemson in the 2015 Orange Bowl.

The Sooners also lost a pair of national championships inside the venue — to Florida in 2008 and USC in 2004.

OU lost a regular-season game there to Miami in 2009.

Of course the Sooners’ best moment inside the stadium came on Jan. 3, 2001, when OU beat Florida State 13-2 to win the program’s seventh national title. The stadium was then known as Pro Player Stadium.

OU also played several Orange Bowls in the old Orange Bowl — the Dolphins’ home from 1966-86 — which was demolished in 2008.

Caesars Superdome, New Orleans

OU’s last two games in the Superdome were Sugar Bowl wins against Auburn in 2016 and against Alabama in 2013.

The Sooners lost the 2003 national championship to LSU in New Orleans.

The Saints originally played at Tulane Stadium, which hosted the Sugar Bowl from 1935-74. OU last played there in 1972.
