Nakamura Kicks Off First Titled Tuesday After Party With Win

by

The late Titled Tuesday tournament may no longer run, but that doesn’t mean the Tuesday chess action stops after one tournament, with the previously announced Titled Tuesday After Party happening each week as well. The inaugural After Party, a two-hour arena tournament with prizes for streamers, was held on September 9 and won by GM Hikaru Nakamura. There was also the Untitled After Party, which was joined by 935 players and won by @deezknights28.

There was $10,000 on offer for the first edition, and several Titled Tuesday regulars were among the 98 participants. The list included second-place GM Oleksandr Bortnyk, fourth-place IM Kacper Drozdowski, and 10th-place GM Benjamin Bok from Titled Tuesday earlier in the day, as well as GM Jose Martinez and IM Renato Terry.

Despite expressing some frustration with his speed of play at times during his stream on Kick, Nakamura ultimately ran away in the standings, with 14 more arena points than anyone else. More than halfway through the arena, Nakamura was still fighting for position, finally pulling into the lead for good with about 45 minutes to go. After that, he ended the tournament with wins in 13 of his last 14 games, including an eight-game winning streak at the very end. Here are all eight of those games:

In the Untitled After Party, @deezknights28 was able to outlast fellow 2600 Chess.com Blitz-rated @TheyStoleMySanity by five points, and no one else within 14 points of them. They split their two head-to-head matches, although the runner-up’s win came in the last game with the result already decided.

The After Party going forward will be held every Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET/21:00 CET with a combined prize fund across the titled and untitled versions of $1,500. See more details at the event page.
