Will Georgia Tech QB Haynes King play against Clemson? Coach Brent Key shares update

by

Georgia Tech football coach Brent Key provided an update on Yellow Jackets starting quarterback Haynes King Thursday ahead of this week’s matchup against No. 11 Clemson.

Key spoke to reporters at his Thursday press conference and noted that the ACC’s first mandated injury/availability report for teams playing conference games would be released later in the day. Under new league rules for 2025, availability reports will be updated Friday before a final release on Saturday.

Key provided a jumpstart ahead of the release of the official report, and it appears King will be ready to go Saturday when Clemson and Georgia Tech open ACC play at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.

“Right now, on the available, Haynes King, Rodney Shelley, A.J. Hoffler,” Key said.

King missed Georgia Tech’s 59-12 win over Gardner-Webb last Saturday with a “lower body injury.” He threw for 143 yards on 13-of-20 passing in the Yellow Jackets’ season-opening win at Colorado on Thursday, Aug. 29, and rushed 19 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns.

King, a sixth-year senior, is in his third season at Georgia Tech after starting 11 games last year and helping guide the Yellow Jackets to a 7-5 record that included a 28-23 upset win over No. 4 Miami on Nov. 9 when the Hurricanes entered the game 9-0. King rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown against Miami.

He totaled 413 all-purpose yards (303 passing, 110 rushing) and five touchdowns in Georgia Tech’s 44-42 eight-overtime loss to rival Georgia. King combined for 2,701 all-purpose yards and 25 touchdowns last season, throwing for 2,114 yards and rushing for another 587.

Hoffler, listed as a starting defensive end on Georgia Tech’s depth chart, transferred from Clemson after last season but hasn’t played in a game this season. Shelley, a senior cornerback who has spent all four seasons at Georgia Tech, also hasn’t seen action thus far in 2025.

Key said that senior defensive lineman Ron Triplette is listened as questionable and added that running backs Trelain Maddox and Chad Alexander were both listed as out — as are defensive backs D.J. Moore and Savion Riley, and defensive lineman Shymeik Jones.

Kickoff for Clemson-Georgia Tech is at noon ET Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN.
