Stefanos Tsitsipas says he wants to "become independent" from social media and that's the reason why his following count on Instagram now stands at zero.
Recently, fans noticed that Tsitsipas removed all of the accounts that he had followed on Instagram, while he has 2 million followers. Knowing the Greek, it looked like something he would do. But some fans expressed concern and wondered whether something negative had happened that prompted the three-time Grand Slam finalist's radical social media move.
In an interview with a Greek publication, Tsitsipas confirmed that lately "some things" happened outside the court. However, he refused to blame that for his Instagram move.
“I spoke with the team that helps me with social media, and I chose to unfollow everyone I was following. It has nothing to do with the people I unfollowed, but more with the fact that I want to become independent from social media. Lately, with all the traveling and the stress I’m going through, I’ve been finding my calmness by disconnecting from anxiety through social media, which is wrong. I’ve been releasing all my stress by going on social media and watching videos for hours, just because I enjoy them," the 27-year-old told SDNA.
Tsitsipas identifies the negative side of Instagram
After making his point clear, Tsitsipas also shared that he would prefer not to use social media for the next couple of years. Then, he went on to suggest that the lifestyle many show on Instagram is not their real life.
"One of the negatives I’ve noticed is that people compare your life to the lives of others and don’t see reality. They only see a polished version," the Greek tennis star added.
Since Tsitsipas is a pro tennis player and has sponsors, deleting his social media accounts isn't an option. But as long as he has a team around that takes care of certain stuff, he won't be required to have an app on his phone or use Instagram in general.
