Hecher Sosa reacts to UFC contract win just days after father’s death
DWCS 82 winner Hecher Sosa talks to MMA Junkie and other reporters after earning a UFC contract from Dana White for his unanimous decision victory
LAS VEGAS – Hecher Sosa was fighting for so much more than a UFC contract at Dana White’s Contender Series 82.
Sosa (14-1) learned of his father’s death while he was cutting weight Sunday for his matchup against Mackson Lee (9-1) on Tuesday at the UFC Apex. Not only did Sosa win the fight, but he earned high praise from Dana White and a UFC contract.
The Spanish bantamweight was happy to give his family something to smile about after their tragedy.
“I am so good. It’s very important that I win for me because I worked so much for that day, but it’s more important for my family because my family is now in the bad moment,” Sosa told MMA Junkie and other reporters on Tuesday. “So, now with my win, they are a little more happy. But for me, it’s very important.”
Sosa was teary eyed when reflecting on his father’s passing and dealing with the emotions heading into the fight.
“This was a rollercoaster of emotions of a week,” Sosa said through an interpreter. “It was obviously a hard week, and before I left home, I basically said goodbye to him because I didn’t know if it was going to be the last time I was going to be able to see him and say things. There were many things left unsaid, but I’m very proud of the fact that I represented him the way he’s always said: always strong, always fair. That’s how I came: strong, fair, and as you see, I always carry him with me on my necklace, and here I am.”
