Gabe Nwosu on Ray Guy Award watchlist

by

For someone who wasn’t even likely to start at his position this year, it’s a remarkable achievement to be considered for one of college football’s most prestigious awards. That’s why Gabe Nwosu’s placement on the Ray Guy Award watchlist seems so special. In the first three weeks of the season, Nwosu has become a kind of cult hero for the Nittany Lions, being able to flip field position with his booming big leg. Now, he is one step closer to getting honored for his achievements.

The award annually given to the nation’s best punter has never been won by a Penn State punter. Only two were finalists, with Jordan Stout in 2001 and Jeremy Kapinos in 2006.

What is most impressive about Nwosu’s addition to the list is that presumed start in the preseason Riley Thompson was first named to the watchlist as the presumptive starter. But after strong performances in spring practices and camp, Gabe Nwosu usurped him.

The 6-6, 297 pounder has been nothing short of an outstanding asset for the Nittany Lions. On his five punts this season, all have landed inside the 20. Two have even landed inside the 10, the best of the lot being this 72 yarder against FIU.

Unfortunately, as a redshirt senior, this may be Nwosu’s final year in Happy Valley. Therefore, Nitttany Lions fans have to cherish him while they still can.
