A great combat sports scholar once said, “Everyone loves a knockout.”
We’re not sure whom it was, and “combat sports” and “scholar” might seem to be opposing ideas. But certainly someone – probably many someones – said it once. But when it comes to said knockouts, there’s some math behind it.
Let’s do a rough, rough dive into the numbers. The UFC has about 20 title fights a year, on average. And about 35 percent of those, on average, are knockout finishes. And while 1 in 3 over a long enough timeline will get you into the Baseball Hall of Fame, it’s not exactly a lock if you’re looking for a big KO in a UFC title fight.
Luckily, the promotion put a whole bunch of classic KO finishes in title bouts together all in one spot – for an hour of head-splitting thrills.
Included in the bunch is Michael Bisping’s stunning knockout of Luke Rockhold – and also Dan Henderson’s stunning knockout of Bisping at UFC 100 … included apparently by mistake since that wasn’t a title fight.
