A year ago, Taylor Fritz lost the decisive Laver Cup match in Berlin. The American made no such mistakes in his native California, leading Team World toward the Laver Cup crown in San Francisco.
Team World led 12-9 against Team Europe ahead of the final singles duel. Fritz faced world no. 3 Alexander Zverev and earned a 6-3, 7-6 victory in an hour and 46 minutes to bring the joy to the red squad.
Fritz bested Zverev for the ninth time in 14 duels, including six straight triumphs since Wimbledon last year. The home player performed well behind the first and second serve, saving two of three break points.

The German could not follow that pace, struggling for the second straight day after falling to Alex de Minaur on Saturday. Alexander dropped 38% of the points in his games and experienced two breaks from four opportunities presented to his opponent.
Taylor landed 27 winners and 16 unforced errors, taming his strokes nicely and moving over the top. The American was off to a flying start, clinching 12 of the opening 14 points.
He broke at 15 in the second game after Zverev's loose backhand and created two more break chances at 3-0. World no. 3 saved them and added his name to the scoreboard.
They served well in the rest of the set. Fritz moved 5-2 up with a forced error and landed a service winner at 5-3 to wrap up the first part of the duel in 42 minutes. They provided four holds at the beginning of the second set.

Alexander missed a backhand in the fifth game and experienced a break that sent him behind. The German made a push on the return in the eighth game and seized the third break point after the rival's loose volley to lock the result at 4-4.
The returners had no chances in the final four games, with the two rivals introducing a tie break. Taylor placed a perfect lob for a 3-0 advantage before Alexander climbed back to 3-3.
Zverev sprayed a forehand error in the seventh point and fell behind. Fritz drew the rival's error with a fine smash in the tenth point and generated two match points.
He seized the first with a volley winner, sealing the deal for Team World and starting a massive celebration with his teammates.
