Bryson DeChambeau recalls nerve-wracking Ryder Cup debut with Woods and Mickelson

by

Bryson DeChambeau made his Ryder Cup debut back in 2018, performing in France. The 31-year-old entered the tournament with high ambitions, but being paired with Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods was a difficult moment for him.

Then the young Bryson lost both matches, and was defeated by Alex Noren later, but such moments were just a wind at his back, considering that a few years later, the American golfer dominated the Ryder Cup.

Speaking to the Ryder Cup's official YouTube channel, DeChambeau revealed how he felt about being paired with such well-known names.

Playing next to Woods and Mickelson is a moment he will never forget.

"I was very much thrown in the fire," DeChambeau said, as quoted by Golf Magic.

"Playing with Tiger was very nerve-racking for me. He's an intimidating guy, I love the guy, and he's amazing.

"But it was wild to see how everybody reacted and treated us with us being overseas. My biggest memory was playing with Tiger on the first tee."

Phil Mickelson

Playing with Phil was a particularly special experience. 'Lefty' did not excel and it was noticeable that their team was close to defeat.

However, Mickelson is a golfer who does not give up easily, and DeChabeau was especially surprised when Mickelson asked for a pep talk.

For the American golfer, the situation seemed very confusing, but he knew that he had to fulfill the expectations of Mickelson and the public.

"Another one was Phil Mickelson, he wasn't playing that great then and he goes, 'Bryson, I just need a pep talk right now, you need to give me a pep talk'," he said.

"As a veteran, the second-most winning golfer in our era.

For me to give him a pep talk down the third fairway, I was like, 'this is so wrong', the roles have been reversed. What's going on?"
