Canton forward Shamira Morton commits to Seton Hall women’s basketball

Canton’s Shamira Morton is headed to the Big East.

Morton announced her women’s basketball commitment to Seton Hall on Sept. 19 from a social media post on X.

“Shamira will leave a legendary mark on Canton girls basketball and the state of Mississippi,” Canton coach Melissa Word told The Clarion Ledger. “I feel as if Seton Hall got a steal of a player who will immediately impact Division I basketball.”

The 6-foot-3 forward has averaged a career 16.2 points per game and 10.9 rebounds after starting on varsity since she was in eighth grade. Morton also averaged a double-double last season with 23.4 points, 14 rebounds and 5.4 blocks.

She was a 2024-25 Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen selection. Morton also held offers from other schools, including Auburn, Southern Miss, SMU and Memphis, among others.

The senior guided the Canton girls’ basketball team to two consecutive MHSAA Class 5A state title appearances, but lost to Laurel in 2024 and recently to Pontotoc in February.

Canton begins its 2025-26 season on Nov. 1 against Madison Central. The Tigers will be in Class 6A this season following MHSAA’s reclassification.
