Indian cricket superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were expected to return to action with the upcoming three-match unofficial ODI series against Australia A, but the lack of communication left the national selectors with a choice to go with the young guns.
Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were last seen in action for India during the team’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph in March earlier this year. During the IPL 2025, they have decided to step away from Test cricket ahead of the England tour, and Shubman Gill got the captaincy.

However, Kohli and Rohit both remain active in ODI cricket, but their return was first cancelled due to political chaos in Bangladesh, as the BCCI suspended the white-ball tour in August. And then reports suggested that the Indian batting icons will play for India A in the white-ball games at home.

But the Indian selectors have decided to go with youngsters who performed well at the domestic cricket and IPL, leaving out both Kohli and Rohit for the upcoming three-match unofficial ODI series against Australia A, starting on September 30 in Kanpur.
Now, the real reason behind their omission from the two separate squads has been revealed by the top BCCI source. Actually, a big drama is brewing in Indian cricket. It is being said that the Indian chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, has reached out to Kohli to discuss what lies ahead, but there hasn’t been much clarity from the former captain’s side. This was reported by the RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan.

Kohli’s silence has sparked fresh doubts about whether the batting giant is ready to continue in ODI cricket. In fact, the Indian cricket team management had been keen to see both Rohit and Kohli feature in the upcoming 50-over matches against Australia A.
They wanted to give the veteran batters some much-needed game time ahead of India’s jam-packed schedule, as they have not played any competitive cricket since the IPL 2025, but only Rohit has shown interest, while Kohli’s stance remains uncertain. And that’s the possible reason they were not named in the squad that was led by Rajat Patidar and Tilak Varma.
