Hunter Pence admits he isn’t exactly known for his grace on the baseball field.
In the latest episode of the “6-1-1 Podcast” co-hosted by Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins, the longtime Major League outfielder opened up on a moment that aptly defined his unconventional style: A crucial double that hit his bat THREE times during Game 7 of the 2012 NLCS.
“It felt like I had a lacrosse ball on my bat, and I threw it out there,” Pence said. “The shortstop went right, and the ball went to his left — never seen that before. Honestly, that was an ‘Angels in the Outfield’-type moment. I don’t even know, man.”
During his 14-year career with the Astros, Phillies, Giants and Rangers, Pence got his chance to play in front of plenty of passionate fans.
He reminisced about his time in San Francisco, a city Howard called “the Philadelphia of the West,” in terms of each club’s rabid fanbase.
“I think I just kind of aligned with the city,” Pence said. “It was a unique culture over there at the time.”
