Ex-Grand Slam semi-finalist declines chance to coach Carlos Alcaraz

by

Carlos Alcaraz, currently the world number one, has been working with the same coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, for seven years. Their collaboration began in 2018, when the young tennis player started training at the Ferrero Tennis Academy.

Although Ferrero had a lot of offers on the table, he had no hesitation in rejecting them or not, aware of the quality Alcaraz has and how much he can help him on his way to the top.

Alcaraz is now one of the biggest names in tennis and has the potential to achieve even greater success.

It is difficult to imagine that he and Ferrero would end their collaboration.

Former Grand Slam semi-finalist Fernando Meligeni spoke about the possibility of becoming Carlos Alcaraz’s coach in an interview with “Clay Tennis”.

However, Meligeni has no ambitions to become a coach, mainly due to the travel, which he likely grew tired of during his career

“Of course, people get excited and say, ‘What if this could happen?’ Everyone has their own quirks. Some people stop playing and don’t even want to watch tennis, while others stop and want to keep travelling,” he said, as quoted by the Tennis Gazette.

“I stopped because I didn’t want to travel.

If you put [Carlos] Alcaraz in front of me saying, ‘I love you, Fer,” I’d say, “Give me a kiss then, because I’m not going to travel with you.

It’s not arrogance, it’s just that I don’t see myself travelling 30 weeks a year, 20 weeks a year.”

His coaching career

The 54-year-old has not had many coaching engagements, considering that he only had one job in 2005, when he was captain of the Davis Cup team of Brazil. He resigned shortly after due to political disagreements.

From his words, one can sense that he has no ambition to return to coaching, aware of the challenges such a job brings and how tiring the travel can be, especially when you are older.
