MIAMI — At a time of year when the Mets can ill afford any sort of setback, they may have lost one of their more consistent hitters.
Brett Baty exited Friday’s game against the Marlins in the second inning due to right side soreness. The infielder grimaced noticeably after swinging through a Sandy Alcantara fastball in the first inning, grabbing at his right side, then appeared to experience more discomfort while throwing out Liam Hicks on a ground ball in the bottom of the inning. He did not return to the field for the second.
Instead, Ronny Mauricio replaced Baty at third base.
If Baty misses significant time, Mauricio, Mark Vientos and Luisangel Acuña would all be candidates to replace him. But none have proven nearly as productive as Baty.
