Vassar College has turned to upstate product Carly Assimon to take over a Brewers women’s basketball program that has competed in the past two NCAA Division III tournaments.
Assimon played high school ball at Fayetteville-Manlius and four seasons at fellow Liberty League member Clarkson University, where she served as a team captain. Since her graduation in 2021, she was an assistant coach at her alma mater in 2021-23 (even serving seven games as interim head coach of the Golden Knights), at SUNY Cortland in 2023-24 and the University of Rochester in 2024-25.

“I am truly honored to be named the next coach of the Vassar College women’s basketball program,” Assimon said.
Vassar athletic director Michelle Walsh said Assimon’s knowledge of the Liberty League was influential in her decision to hire.

“Throughout the interview process, Carly shared a clear vision for the program that supports student-athlete pursuit of excellence, both in the classroom and on the court,” Walsh said. “I am excited for the future of the women’s basketball team with Carly leading the way.”

Assimon takes over for Meredith Mesaris, who took the head coaching job at Tufts in August. Mesaris guided Vassar to a 25-3 season and first Liberty League title in 10 years in 2023-24. Last season, the Brewers were 21-7 and won the Liberty League as a No. 2 playoff seed.
