Will Rohit Sharma be sacked as the One Day International (ODI) captain of the India National Cricket Team ahead of the upcoming series against the Australia National Cricket Team?
The biggest question currently in Indian cricket is regarding the future of the modern-day batting great Rohit Sharma in international cricket.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to return for Australia tour
The modern-day batting greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are active in international cricket only as one-format players. They retired from T20I cricket in 2024 and from Test cricket in 2025 – at the same time.
Your daily dose of cricket!
Rohit and Virat Kohli had a glorious end to their T20I careers as they finished it by winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. However, the same can’t be said about their Test retirements, as they experienced an extended lean patch with the bat. Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement on May 7, 2025, and a few days later, on May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli announced his Test retirement.
Rohit and Kohli were last seen in action in international cricket for the Indian team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The duo played quite well in the competition and helped India win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Meanwhile, they are set to make their comeback to international cricket in the upcoming ODI series against the Australia National Cricket Team, as per a report in PTI.
BCCI to pick Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODI squad on October 4
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee will meet on Saturday, October 4, to pick the ODI and T20I squads for the Australia tour. They are set to name Rohit and Kohli in the ODI squad amid intense speculations over their future in Indian cricket.
“The selectors are likely to sit down on Saturday, the third day of the ongoing first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad, to pick the squads. But there is no clarity yet on the squad announcement,” the report in PTI read.
Recently, Kohli and Rohit returned to training and have worked very hard in the gym and nets to prepare themselves for the Australia tour after staying away from competitive cricket. They have also passed the fitness tests conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to declare their availability for the ODI series against the Aussies.
Rohit Sharma NOT TO BE SACKED!!
Earlier, some reports suggested that the captaincy of Rohit is under threat, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) looking to hand the reins to Shubman Gill of the ODI team.
However, the report in PTI claims that the BCCI is in no mood to sack Rohit Sharma because he has been performing well consistently with the bat, and the team is also doing well under his leadership.
“There is also no reason to remove Rohit from the leadership role as he has hardly had a failure in this format unless he himself wants to concentrate on his batting,” the report further added.
Notably, Rohit has shed a lot of weight and has maxed out his fitness levels with an eye on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which will be played in African countries. It will be interesting to see if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are considered for the next 50-over World Cup. However, currently, the BCCI isn’t concerned about it and is focusing on the T20 World Cup 2026.
“The priority at the moment rests with the T20 World Cup early next year at home, and gaining the maximum WTC points from the four home Tests in 2025,” the report added.
