“Unreal!” That’s how Sean O’Connell described one of the most shocking finishes of the year, and he wasn’t lying.
In a fight that Magomed Magomedov was completely dominating, Sergio Pettis – from out of nowhere – landed a vicious spinning back elbow in the second round to score a devastating and unlikely knockout win Friday at PFL Champions Series: Dubai from Coca-Cola Arena.
Magomedov was having his way with Pettis on the mat and standing for almost two full rounds until he made the fatal mistake of jumping in with a flying knee. With Pettis up against the cage, he simply unloaded a spinning elbow that immediately floored Magomedov. One more follow-up punch put the finishing touch on a spectacular finish.
You can watch the finish in the video below:
Despite how the fight had been unfolding, Pettis said afterward that he never lost hope.
“I always have faith in myself, man. I’ve got God with me,” Pettis told Sean O’Connell during his post-fight interview. “… He was talking to me the whole fight, overconfidence, and I think that bit him in the butt.”
The win was the second of the year for Pettis (25-7), and now the former Bellator champion could be set up for a bantamweight title shot.
