A nail-biting moment unfolded after the lunch break on Day 3 as the Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah fired a lightning-fast bouncer at Alick Athanaze, and the ball smashed straight into the West Indies batter’s helmet in the ongoing first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Alick Athanaze had thought the ball would go down the leg side, but he misjudged the speed, as it came straight at his head. He tried to duck, but there was no time to move out of the way. Luckily, the fierce delivery struck the side of his helmet but was enough to scare the players on the field.

The physio rushed onto the field to check for a concussion, but thankfully, Athanaze was cleared to continue playing. Bumrah also checked whether the West Indies star was okay before the game resumed at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

However, they had to bring a new helmet from far away. After a short wait, Athanaze had a few helmets to choose from before facing the next delivery.

Meanwhile, India crushed the West Indies in a one-sided affair, wrapping up the first Test match inside just 89.2 overs across both innings, exposing the Caribbean team’s struggles in the format. After declaring with a massive lead of 286, India wasted no time in attacking the West Indies’ top order.
Mohammed Siraj struck early, removing Tagenarine Chanderpaul with the help of a brilliant catch by Nitish Reddy. Ravindra Jadeja then took control, spinning a web around the unsettled batting lineup and reducing the visitors to 46 for 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
A small resistance came through a brief partnership between Alick Athanaze (38) and Justin Greaves (25), but Washington Sundar broke it, and Siraj returned with a fiery double strike in a single over to push India further ahead. Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav finished off the tail with ease.
Earlier, the West Indies was bowled out for just 162 runs, thanks to a lethal spell by Mohammed Siraj (4/40) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/42). India continued their dominance with the bat as well, as they declared their innings at 448/5 on the back of centuries from KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja.
After India’s one-innings and 140-run win, Jadeja was named Player of the Match for his all-round efforts against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. India now leads the two-match Test series 1-0 and heads into the second Test with complete momentum, starting on October 10 in Delhi.
Roston Chase admits batting collapse cost West Indies in Ahmedabad
After losing the game, West Indies captain Roston Chase defended his decision to bat first in Ahmedabad, saying there was a bit of moisture but they failed to make the most of the turf. He admitted that the batting is West Indies’ main problem, and the lack of partnerships is playing a major role in their underwhelming performances in the format.
Roston Chase said at the post-match presentation, “When you win the toss and get bowled out for 160-odd, it is tough to come back from that. Not the performance we were looking for. We have to bat better, especially in India; you have to put up a big first-innings total, and that is something we need to look at.”
