The NASCAR Cup Series heads into its annual chaos-filled cut race at the Roval, where the playoff field will be trimmed from 12 drivers down to eight over the course of 109 laps.
The hybrid road course weaving through the Charlotte Motor Speedway infield has been nothing short of dramatic since it joined the schedule in 2018. Its debut year famously ended with Jimmie Johnson colliding with Martin Truex Jr. on the final lap while battling for the win — a crash that knocked Johnson out of the playoffs.
So far, Ryan Blaney (New Hampshire winner) and Chase Elliott (Kansas winner) have already locked in their spots for the Round of 8. The other drivers currently above the elimination line are Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, William Byron, Chase Briscoe, and Joey Logano.
On the outside looking in, Ross Chastain, Bubba Wallace, Tyler Reddick, and Austin Cindric all have work to do if they want to keep their championship hopes alive.
Meanwhile, Shane van Gisbergen may no longer be in the title hunt after being knocked out in Round 1, but the Trackhouse Racing star still has history within reach. A victory at the Roval would give him five straight wins on road or street courses
