No. 5 Texas A&M’s Week 6 home win over Mississippi State featured the second straight elite defensive performance, led by senior edge Cashius Howell’s six pressures and three sacks. At the same time, junior linebacker Daymion Sanford recorded nine tackles, a sack, and his first career interception in one of the more impressive performances of the weekend.
While Howell has been a player on the rise since last season, Sanford, who has been playing in place of senior linebacker Scooby Williams, who is currently injured, was not expected to become a defensive star this season. Still, when the opportunity arose, the Katy, Texas native has now become one of the defense’s most important players, five games into the year.

Unsurprisingly, both players earned the highest Pro Football Focus grades on defense and received two honors courtesy of the Southeastern Conference, as Daymion Sanford was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, and Cashius Howell was selected as SEC Defensive Line Player of the Week.
Howell currently leads Texas A&M with seven sacks and is on his way to potentially leading the conference in sacks and pressures if the Aggie defense continues to play at an elite level, starting with Florida on Saturday night. For Sanford, even when Scooby Williams returns, I expect the junior linebacker to continue seeing the field based on what he’s accomplished over the last two weeks.
