Jakub Wiklacz confident in judges scoring after Patchy Mix split decision win
UFC 320 winner Jakub Wiklacz spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after his split decision victory over Patchy Mix
LAS VEGAS – Jakub Wiklacz’s UFC debut was a big one – a win over former Bellator champion Patchy Mix in one of the biggest events of the year. However, it did come with some controversy, at least for some.
The former KSW champion made his octagon debut this past Saturday in the preliminary card of UFC 320 – which went at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After 15 minutes of hard fighting, Wiklacz (17-3-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) ended up edging out Mix (20-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in a split decision, which caused plenty of chatter and dispute in the MMA community.
For Wiklacz, it was clear he had won two of the three rounds of the fight, and felt confident heading to the scorecards.
“To be honest, after the fight I was just angry at that third round, but after these two rounds I was confident that I had won the two rounds,” Wiklacz told reporters at the UFC 320 post-fight press conference. “I had submissions, I was striking well, I got him on the body and head, and I was happy about those two rounds.”
Not every day do UFC debutants get to draw someone of the stature of Mix for the first assignment in the promotion. Wiklacz is happy that he was tested right off the bat, as that’s exactly why he joined the UFC in the first place.
“It’s a big thing to step in the UFC octagon and fight with an ex-Bellator champion,” Wiklacz said. “It’s something amazing, but I knew in my mind that it was just the next fight. My dream, from the beginning of my career, was to fight with the best guys, and I’m just happy to be here and to do it. This is just a start of this way.”
