Shin Ohashi in Position to Challenge World Junior Records at World Cup Circuit
Already the fastest man in the world for 2025 in the long-course version of the 200-meter breaststroke, Japan’s Shin Ohashi is ready to put his short-course skill on display.
The 16-year-old phenom is part of a strong Japanese contingent that is scheduled to race at the World Aquatics World Cup, which will get underway with Leg One this week. The opening stop will take place in Carmel (Ind.) from Oct. 10-12, with visits to Westmont (Ill.) and Toronto following. By visiting North America, the World Cup is veering from its typical locales of Asia and Europe.
Ohashi currently owns the fastest time in the world in the 200 breaststroke (LC), thanks to the 2:06.91 he produced in high school competition in July. The youngster was the silver medalist in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke at the recent World Junior Championships, finishing behind Great Britain’s Filip Nowacki in both events. Ohashi also earned a bronze medal at World Juniors in the 50 breaststroke.
At the World Cup, Ohashi has a strong chance of breaking the world junior record in the 200 breaststroke. He is entered with a time of 2:04.03, which is not far off the junior mark of 2:03.23. That record has stood to Japan’s Akihiro Yamaguchi since the 2012 season. Ohashi could also challenge the world junior record in the 100 breaststroke, which belongs to Italy’s Simone Cerasuolo at 56.66.
