Where Josh Heupel ranks for college football head coach salaries in 2025

USA TODAY released updated college football head coaching salaries on Wednesday.

Josh Heupel is in his fifth season as Tennessee’s head coach in 2025. He has a $9,000,000 total pay salary, the 12th highest in college football among head coaches.

Heupel also has $1,700,000 for a maximum bonus and a $37,500,000 buyout, as of Dec. 1.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart ranks first nationally for total pay ($13,003,000) and total buyout amount ($105,107,583). Steve Sarkisian (Texas), Kaleb DeBoer (Alabama) and Brian Kelly (LSU) are also earning $10,000,000-plus as SEC head coaches.

Heupel joins, Mark Stoops (Kentucky), Lane Kiffin (Ole Miss) and Eliah Drinkwitz (Missouri) in earning $9,000,000 in the SEC.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day ranks second nationally in salary with $12,575,000. His buyout is $70,916,667.
