NBA fans have been drooling over the offseason progress that San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama has made. Over the summer, he worked with Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett to improve his game. Thus far, the results have been impressive, to say the least.
Wemby is clearly stronger, but what stood out to me was his decision-making near the rim.
Seems like an emphasis this offseason was to make faster decisions in the post… keep the ball up high and immediately make a move downhill.

One thing that was immediately noticeable about his play during the Spurs’ recent scrimmage was him looking to make quicker decisions in the paint. He also showed off noticeably better footwork, including spin moves to shake his defender ala Olajuwon.
Equally as impressive was his tossing teammate Luke Kornet out of the way by lowering his shoulder, en route to a monster dunk.

Victor Wembanyama has learned from the best
Seeing a 7’4″ center bring the ball up the floor, attack the paint, and clear out another 7’0″ like he was patio furniture is a bad sign for the best of the league. Having more of a killer instinct on offense might be something that Garnett instilled in him.
He was never afraid to go for the jugular and probably encouraged Wembanyama to be more assertive when he has a physical advantage. To be clear, that is literally every single play of every second he’s in the game.
Continuing to add to his game is a scary thought when Wembanyama averaged 24.3 points per game last season. His shooting better from outside and getting better shots in the paint, including more free throws, could take his game to a whole other level.
Victor Wembanyama’s new skills could make the Spurs contenders
Imagine him being able to punish big men one-on-one in the post, forcing teams to double-team him even though he can easily see over the double teams. His passing was on full display during the Spurs’ first preseason game, with him racking up seven assists in only 16 minutes.

Teams will have to pick their poison with him already being an elite scorer inside the arc, hitting nearly 59% of his 2-point field goals last season. A potentially more assertive and more physical Wembanyama could punish teams inside the arc.
He could also punish teams from outside, making him a scary offensive threat to go along with already elite defense.
All told, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama’s improved play has been on full display during the preseason with an apparent assist from Olajuwon and Garnett. If Wembanyama can incorporate those learned skills into his game, then he could quickly emerge as the best player in the NBA.
