Iowa Swimming Topples Northern Iowa in Season Opener

University of Iowa swimming and diving defeated Northern Iowa in the season opener, 224-74, at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday evening.

“It was a fantastic start to our season tonight. We had a total team effort to win 16 out of 16 events,” Iowa coach Nathan Mundt said. “This was a remarkable performance against a good Northern Iowa team. We’ve been working hard to start strong the first few weeks, so it’s great to see that hard work pay off. Now, we can go back and continue to work and get ready for Minnesota.”

Juniors Addie Crain and Olivia Swalley, freshman Payton Flowers and sophomore Rachel Dildine started the meet with a 200-medley relay win. Flowers collected two individual wins in her first meet as a Hawkeye and Swalley added another three. Flowers swept the 50 (23.57) and 100 (51.83) freestyle and Swalley took home the 200 free (1:51.08), 200 breaststroke (2:19.18), 200 IM (2:03.81).

Senior diver Lainey Woodward clinched both the one- and three-meter dive, with a career best of 308.15 on the three-meter. Freshman Zita Bernatsky added points for the Hawkeyes as well, coming in second in both the one-meter (277.10) and three-meter (297.40) to add to Iowa’s win.

The 400 free relay was the final event of the night. Iowa took first place in 3:29.25 to secure the Hawkeye victory. This event completed Iowa’s sweep of all swimming and diving events in the season opener.
