Famous tennis figures reacted to the extension of the WTA and ATP tournaments. Opinions are divided when it comes to the new format, but world number one Aryna Sabalenka also had an interesting take.
In an interview with Tennis365, Sabalenka revealed whether she prefers a system where the tournament is played over 12 days. The Belarusian tennis player believes that two-week tournaments are probably better for her, as they give her an extra day to recover.
However, there are times when she would rather play a one-week tournaments.
In the end, it can be said that the famous tennis player indicated that a lot depends on her schedule, how many tournaments she plays during the year, whether she is rested and whether she has an injury.
“With me getting older, probably I prefer to play two weeks, so I have an extra day for the recovery,” said Sabalenka, as quoted by Tennis 365.
“Also, I didn’t play Beijing, so physically, I’m ready to play every day. So probably I would prefer every day matches and get it done in one week and have some extra time for recovery and preparation for the finals.
So, like throughout the year, I prefer two weeks. Like Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid I prefer two weeks so we can have those but maybe by the end of the year, they should make it shorter.”
Jasmine Paolini reacts
It is similar with the famous tennis player Jasmine Paolini, who points out that it would be best if some tournaments lasted two weeks.
When you play a two-week tournament, you don't have much space for rest and training, but such a format still brings certain benefits during the tournament itself.
Paolini, just like her colleagues, believes that everything depends on several factors.
Tennis governing bodies will certainly introduce changes that they believe could elicit the best response, both from the public and from professional players. However, the question is whether these changes will be beneficial for everyone.
In any case, there will still be those who are dissatisfied.
