Novak Djokovic failed to reach the final at his beloved Shanghai Masters. The veteran suffered a 6-3, 6-4 defeat against world no. 204 Valentin Vacherot in the semi-final, experiencing one of his career-worst defeat in terms of ranking.

Monegasque played at a high level and outpaced the legend who struggled with left hip issues and required medical treatments. However, Novak did not want to take anything away from Valentin's impressive triumph.

Embracing a handshake at the net, Djokovic acknowledged Vacherot's success and praised his game and attitude. The 24-time Major winner backed the 26-year-old to go all the way and lift a trophy against his cousin, Arthur Rinderknech.

It was a gracious response from the four-time champion, who liked what he saw from a player who entered the qualifying draw as an alternate and presented composed tennis.

As Novak emphasized, the day belonged to his rival, who deserved to beat him. Despite the Serb's physical condition, the Monegasque's victory marks one of the most surprising results of the season.

Valentin suffered a break in the first game of the match before raising his level and outplaying the favorite. He played against only two break point and kept the pressure on the veteran.

Djokovic did not serve as in previous matches, struggling with his movement and never finding his A-game despite taking painkillers. However, the legend's response at the net was nothing but gracious, making his rival's career-best moment even more memorable.

For Vacherot, the victory marks a career-defining milestone and the continuation of a fairy tale run that made him the lowest-ranked Masters 1000 finalist.

"I want to congratulate Valentin for reaching his first Masters 1000 final. Having to qualify for the main draw, he has written an amazing story. At the net, I told him that he has had an incredible tournament.

More so, I praised his attitude and game, as they are amazing as well. It's all about him today, as he was a better player. I wish him all the best in the final," Novak Djokovic said.
