Debuting Teagan O’Dell, Torri Huske Win Twice at Triton Invitational

Torri Huske and Teagan O’Dell, the latter in her collegiate debut, won twice on Saturday on the second and final day of the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego.

O’Dell’s California squad won both the men’s and women’s competitions in La Jolla Saturday, with the Stanford women’s second. The Golden Bears scored 1,202 points on the women’s side, followed by Stanford’s 898.5, then 619.5 for San Diego, 517 for Hawaii and 454 for UC Santa Barbara.

Cal’s 1,476 was almost more than the rest of the men’s field combined. Hawaii checked in second in 654.5, 20 points up on UC San Diego’s 634.5 with USCB fourth in 573.

O’Dell opened the second day of the meet by winning the 400 individual medley. The two-time Swimming World Female High School Swimmer of the Year went 4:10.33, a time that was nearly five seconds ahead of Stanford’s Caroline Bricker.

O’Dell later added a win in the 200 backstroke, her time of 1:55.72 pulling her away from Cal teammate Mary-Ambre Moluh, who was second in 156.93.

Huske broadened her range for the meet. The Olympic gold medalist won the 200 freestyle in 1:44.45, up on the Cal trio of Ella Cosgrove (1:45.13), Lilou Ressencourt and Alex McDevitt. Huske also won the 100 free in 48.34, edging out 100 fly winner Mia West of Cal, who went 48.67. Moluh was third, Ressencourt fourth.

West went 52.13 to win the 100 fly, with Cal teammate Ava Chavez second and Stanford’s Lucy Bell in third. Silje Slyngstadli did the Saturday breaststroke double, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.01, more than a second up on Lucy Thomas. She took home the 200 in 2:11.23, two seconds up on Bricker.

Camille Henveaux won the 1,650 freestyle in 16:30.02, just about 30 seconds up on Hawaii’s Brooke Bennett. The Golden Bears won the concluding 200 free relay, the quartet of Sydney Griscavage, Moluh, Femke Hoppenbrouwer and West going 1:30.23 to edge a Huske Stanford quartet by .23 seconds.

On the men’s side, Cal won all but the concluding relay. Ryan Erisman and Casper Puggaard both doubled up on wins Friday, Erisman adding the 400 IM crown in 3:44.88 and Puggaard the 100 fly in 46.65. Puggaard was second to the 1:42.15 of Humberto Najera in the 200 back.

Kenneth Barnicle led a 1-2-3 for Cal in the 200 free, his time of 1:37.07 leading out Keaton Jones and Nikolas Antoniou, both in 1:37s. Yamato Okadome won the 100 breast in 51.79. Freddy Klein, the runner-up in the 400 IM, won the 1,650 free in 15:17.06. Nans Mazellier won the 100 free in 42.84, then Zachary Tan won the 200 breast.

Hawaii finished up the meet by going 1:18.99 to win the 200 free relay with the quartet of Karol Ostrowski, Finn Brophy, Mario Surkovic and Regan Richardson. The time was .04 seconds up on the Cal A relay that included Mazellier and Lucca Battaglini.

Ostrowski, who won the 50 free on Friday, was fourth in the 100 fly. Brophy was second in the 100 free in 43.31, with Surkovic third.
