Upcoming Iowa football opponent Penn State suffers devastating injury

What started as one of Iowa‘s most high-profile and challenging home games will suddenly look much different for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa’s Oct. 18 opponent, Penn State (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten), not only suffered their second straight embarrassing loss and their third straight overall with a shocking 22-21 home defeat against Northwestern, but the Nittany Lions also lost one of their most important stars as collateral damage.

During Penn State’s Saturday stunner at the hand of the Wildcats, senior quarterback Drew Allar suffered a significant lower left leg injury that has ended the star signal-caller’s season and likely his collegiate career.

Penn State head football coach James Franklin confirmed that Allar’s injury was season-ending after his team’s loss to Northwestern.

With Allar done for the season, redshirt freshman quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer will assume control of the Penn State offense. The 6-foot-2, 207-pound, former four-star quarterback came into action during the fourth quarter but was only on the field for one play before Northwestern took over control of the football and managed to run off the remaining clock.

The Oct. 18 matchup against Penn State will begin at 6 p.m. CT and will stream exclusively on Peacock.
