Preview: Schloesser and Fullerton still the men to beat

The only time Mikey and Mathias have faced each other outdoors this season was in Antalya, which Mikey edged by a point 158-157 before exiting at the hands of Italy’s Michea Godano – also in Nanjing this week.

We can’t read too much into that single last-32 match, given their current stratospheric levels of performance. While Matias has gained, with the world number one spot, a big symbolic victory, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Schloesser has won two World Cup stages and the World Games title – while, of course, being a parent to a baby just a few months old.

Nic Girard’s win at Gwangju 2025 and his stage victory in Madrid show that he is entirely capable of pulling off a win, and his average arrow score is actually higher than both Fullerton and Schloesser this season.

It’s difficult, but not impossible to see someone else in the field pulling off a surprise victory too. Rishabh Yadav has podiumed twice at World Cups this year and has the chops if one of the big guns falter. You can never entirely discount Kim Jongho, either.

One thing is for sure: this will be a massive final, likely decided by just a single point. Expect fireworks.
