Yana Santos explains why she’s especially surprised that Macy Chiasson never showed remorse for missing weight at UFC 320.
Chiasson (10-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) missed the bantamweight mark by 1.5 pounds for her prelim bout against Santos (17-8 MMA, 7-5 UFC) last Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. She was fined 35 percent of her purse, and wound up losing a unanimous decision.
Santos took issue with Chiasson missing weight, but even more issue for her failing to take accountability.
“I’m not happy that she missed weight, but I’m happy that I made some extra money,” Santos told MMA Junkie Radio. “A lot of people say, ‘Oh, it’s just 1, 2 pounds – no difference,’ but it’s the hardest pounds to cut. So the time when I’m suffering and cutting the last pounds, she just goes there, weighs herself, saves her energy. This is the most important pound and if it’s easy, you can just cut it and make weight, so it doesn’t make sense.
“No one apologized before the fight or even after the fight, so I came to her and said, minimum you can do is say sorry. Even after the fight, it didn’t come from her. This is a completely strange situation, because I know before she was supposed to fight Aspen Ladd and (Ladd) missed by one pound, she refused to fight her and complained a lot. But when the situation is opposite and she’s in that place, she didn’t say sorry. This is strange for me.”
Santos will put her title hopes aside as long as American Top Team training partner Kayla Harrison is bantamweight champion. However, after her third-straight win, she hopes to continue climbing the ladder.
“I think in the top 10, there are so many girls who are tough and interesting fights,” Santos said. “I would like to fight anyone who I haven’t fought before because some girls I already fought, and there are so many interesting fights. Whoever will be ready at the same time. I can’t tell you a specific name, but if someone higher ranked, it’s always more exciting. Now Norma (Dumont) is going to fight (Ketlen) Vieira. I know (Raquel) Pennington is injured. Let’s see after (a few) months.”
