The preseason Associated Press top 25 poll for men’s basketball came out on Monday, and as expected, Marquette is not included in the rankings. Heck, it’s also not surprising that the Golden Eagles did not receive a single vote. There’s just way too many questions about MU at this point of the year for any of the voters to seriously consider them as one of the best 25 teams in the country heading into the season.
With that said, Marquette is not short on opponents that are in the top 25 to start the campaign. That list starts right at the top of the poll, as Purdue is the preseason #1 team in the country. Marquette will visit the Boilermakers on December 13th for their last game before Big East play opens against Georgetown on December 17th.

The Golden Eagles will see two preseason top five teams in Big East play as well. UConn starts the season at #4, including two first place votes, while St. John’s is one spot behind them at #5. There’s a 96 point differential between the two teams, so we can hardly say it was close between them, but is there really that much of a difference between #4 and #5?
If we keep on scrolling, there’s two more ranked teams on the schedule. Creighton starts off the year at #23, while Wisconsin is one spot behind them at #24. We can say right now that the Golden Eagles will get a chance to directly change one voter’s mind in the first week of the season. That’s Andy Greder from the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and he has Indiana at #25 in the country. That’s IU’s only preseason top 25 vote, and Marquette will clash with the Hoosiers on Sunday, November 9th, the last day of the first week of the season. Beat Indiana, take their top 25 vote, right? That’s how it should work, I think.
Marquette is set to start the season on Monday, November 3, when they host Albany at Fiserv Forum. Tipoff on that game is set for 7pm Central, and ESPN+ will have the broadcast.
