The college basketball season is right around corner, and one particular ratings system has Michigan State on short list of true National Championship contenders in the preseason.
The preseason Kenpom preseason ratings were released last with Michigan State coming as the No. 25 ranked team in the country — which is just a few spots lower than the preseason Associated Press Top 25 that dropped on Monday. But potentially more importantly in the preseason Kenpom ratings is the adjusted offense and defense ratings, which often indicate who will contend for the national title.

Per betting expert Kody Malstrom, Michigan State is one of 14 teams that lands above a threshold in both the adjusted offense and defense ratings that helps project who will win the national championship. Here’s the list of teams from Malstrom that “qualifies” as a potential national champion:
Not a bad list for the Spartans to be apart of when you see who else is in the mix.
Do I personally think Michigan State at this point in time is a true title contender? No, not yet at least, with a known need for a number of guys to take that next step in leading the Spartans this year. But this preseason rating system should at least give fans more confidence and faith in Michigan State not seeing a huge drop off from last season. We can definitely take that away from this list.

Michigan State opens the regular season on November 3 against Colgate. That game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on Big Ten Plus.
