After capturing her first WNBA championship last week with the Las Vegas Aces, Iowa women’s basketball legend Megan Gustafson made a surprise stop at the Hawkeyes’ practice on Tuesday after the program held its annual media day activities.
Gustafson, who has her No. 10 jersey retired in the rafters of Carver-Hawkeye Arena, was able to provide some words of wisdom to the Hawkeyes ahead of this upcoming Iowa women’s basketball season.

Iowa was recently revealed as the nation’s No. 21 team in the preseason AP top 25 poll and feature a nucleus that returns senior forward Hannah Stuelke, graduate guard Kylie Feuerbach and senior guard Taylor McCabe.
Iowa went and signed two coveted transfers this offseason in former Georgia Tech guard Chazadi “Chit-Chat” Wright and in former UCF small forward Emely Rodriguez.
During a historic four-year tenure at Iowa from 2015-19, Gustafson averaged 20.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.1 assists per game on 65.6% shooting from the floor, 50% from 3-point territory, and 76.8% from the free-throw line. The Port Wing, Wis., product was honored as the Naismith Trophy winner following the 2018-19 women’s college basketball season.

While serving in a depth role off the bench for the Aces this season, the 6-foot-4, seventh-year center delivered impactful minutes in times when the team’s All-Star caliber frontcourt needed periods of rest.
This is also not the first time Gustafson has made an appearance at an Iowa team practice this offseason, as she also stopped by Iowa City on July 17 during the WNBA’s All-Star break.
