Illinois Swims Past Iowa State Led by Stellar Diving Performance
The Illinois swim and dive team finished the first half of their dual meet against Iowa State on Friday (Oct. 17).
Matilda Garcia recorded the program’s eighth-best three-meter dive in her silver medal finish with a score of 305.20 points.
Illinois defeated Iowa State 121-65 on day one. The two-day dual meet will be scored as two duals, one on each day, as the Illini take day one.
The Illini dominated from start to finish tonight winning eight of 10 events starting with the 200 medley relay team of Sophia Paduano, Kayla Duran, Chloe Diner and Isabella Wilhelm (1:43.02).
Diner would later go on to take the gold in the 100 butterfly (56.37), Wilhelm did so in the 50 freestyle (23.79) and Paduano claimed the title in the 100 backstroke (56.46).
Sara Jass earned two event crowns for Illinois in the 200 freestyle (1:52.35) and the 200 IM (2:02.10). Liv Dorshorst topped the podium in the 1000 (10:22.09) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Maggie Adler, Wilhelm, Sophia Yousuf and Audrey Cavaliere closed out the day with one final gold (3:31.64).
On the diving side, Bethany Mercer placed fifth (273.50, Elleka Boeres placed seventh with a new personal-best score (264.60) and Carlie Rose finished 10th (237.80) for Illinois
