Adam Radwan: Leicester Tigers win shows there is more to him than just tries

Leicester head coach Geoff Parling believes the key to free-scoring wing Adam Radwan’s England recall is his improved defence.

The 27-year-old has scored 12 tries in 13 league matches for the Tigers since he was signed from Newcastle nine months ago.

Radwan was named in England’s training squad on Sunday evening for a three-day get-together this week, raising hopes he could be included in the squad for the autumn internationals.

But while it is his try-scoring which has caught the attention, Parling feels it is Radwan’s work without the ball which has benefited him most.

“I’ve always known he could beat someone in a phone box but I have been really pleased this season with his defence work and his aerial game which is so important at Test level,” said Parling.

“For me, he’s certainly put himself in position now to get back in that international frame.”

Radwan won the last of his two caps for England in 2021, scoring against Tonga after grabbing a hat-trick on his debut against Canada.

However he faded from international contention in a struggling Newcastle team.

The mid-season move to Tigers though has reinvigorated his career.

Radwan is one of five Leicester players who will train with England this week at Pennyhill Park alongside Freddie Steward, Ollie Chessum, Joe Heyes and the uncapped Emeka Ilione.

The quintet will all be released back to Leicester for Saturday’s Prem game against Sale at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.

England head coach Steve Borthwick names his squad for the autumn Tests, which kick off against Australia on November 1, on Sunday.
