Some players want the spotlight, crave the big moment and live to be a hero. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is one of those players.
In an interview with SportsNet reporter Hazel Mae after the Blue Jays beat the Mariners, 6-2, on Sunday night to force Game 7 of the ALCS, Guerrero made it clear that he can’t wait for what will be the biggest game of his career to date.
“Are you ready?” Mae asked Guerrero, the question broadcast on the Rogers Centre PA system.
Before Guerrero could answer, the crowd began to cheer. A big smile crossed his face as he took a few moments to bask in the love, while the camera panned around him in almost cinematic fashion.
After nearly 20 seconds, Guerrero gave an answer befitting his three homers and series-best 1.474 OPS so far.
“You asked me if I’m ready. I was born ready. I was born ready,” he said. “And I want it all for this city.”
The Toronto crowd roared with approval, knowing that Guerrero is a man on a mission — and that one more win would send him and the Blue Jays to the team’s first World Series in 32 years.
