Tennis fans in France have enormous respect for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the French tennis player who marked an era of tennis. Tsonga is a former Australian Open finalist, and his career-high ranking was fifth.
Although his career was filled with injuries, Tsonga was always passionate and wanted to prove himself on the big stage.
However, now that he is retired, some are wondering if he is ready to take on new challenges and take on new roles. In an interview with Univers Tennis, Tsonga talked about the chances of becoming France's captain in the Davis Cup.
The French tennis player stressed that the French Tennis Federation was not open to Tsonga becoming captain for one interesting reason.
“Yeah, I responded to the call from the Federation, who asked former players if they wanted to be the captain of the Davis Cup,” said Tsonga, as quoted by Tennis Gazette.
“They called me to tell me that I had conflicts of interest with my academies, that’s why it didn’t happen. I supposedly had conflicts of interest, so it was not possible.”
Tsonga's views
When asked by the reporter if it would ever be possible for him to lead this team, the French tennis player believes that the chances are small. However, Tsonga firmly denies that there is any conflict of interest, while on the other hand important figures of the tennis scene in France have different views.
Tsonga is aware that such an opportunity may open up for him in the future, given that the world of tennis is changeable and that a lot can happen in the coming period.
The experienced tennis player is certainly open to such an option and is excited about the possibility of becoming the captain, but he knows that at this moment many factors depend on that role.
“I can’t, I’ll always have conflicts of interest from what they say. I don’t feel that there are conflicts of interest, but for them, I have conflicts of interest. So, I don’t see why it would suddenly change, you know. But maybe, maybe.”- he concluded.
